Much cheaper to buy a new printer than new toner

I wasn’t kidding last year when I said it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy new toner.  Now you can get this Samsung laser printer for $40.  I still remember buying my first laser printer more than 10 years ago for nearly $900 which was an HP 2100.  That was better than an old friend of mine that bought an HP 2 personal laser printer for $2000+ in the late 80s.  It’s still a great printer and handles printing better than my one year old Samsung color laser.  I still dread the day I have to buy replacement toner for the 2100 though.

Not always cheaper… my experience has been, the low end printers come with a “starter cartridge” that is only good for a fraction of the pages as the retail cartridge. In my Brother HL2070N, for example, I got roughly 1200 pages out of the initial cartridge (printer purchase price roughly $100), while the replace cartridge (about $70 at Staples) will last for 3,000 pages, at least. But yeah, it is definitely getting there! If the printer comes with a full blown retail cartridge, yeah, it’s a steal. Even if the printer is a few bucks more, just sell it on eBay for $50. :)
