The netbook consumes less than 6 watts idle so the fan is almost completely silent. Suspend works well and that's what I like to use. Hybernate does work but I hate using it on any computer because it takes too long to start up.

Netbooks are not designed to replace your desktop or full size notebook; it's there to complement it when you're on the move. It's always better to have a bigger screen but what tends to happen is that you don't take the notebook with you because it's too heavy and bulky. So the netbook screen is small compared to a notebook but much MUCH nicer than a cell phone. That's the point of the netbook. Will you get tired working on it? I don't know, that's an individual thing. It doesn't bother me too much for simple web browsing but I'm not going to be doing any kind of heavy duty workstation computing on it.

I have a few questions if you don't mind.

I'm curious how loud the 1000HE is. The Toshiba I'm working on now has an old Northwood 2.6ghz processor in it which, as you probably know, is a pretty hot processor even when it's clocked down and idle. It's a loud notebook not because it has too many cooling devices or because they were poorly designed, but because it is necessary to keep the thing from overheating even when it's not really doing anything.

As I understand things, the processors that came after the Northwood and Prescott were better designed and on a smaller scale so that they run cooler, but how does that translate to the 1000HE and the Atom processor? From the power consumption you described I would assume that it's fairly silent most of the time, but is it very quiet all of the time?

And what of suspend, it doesn't sound like you're talking about hibernation. Does this netbook support hibernation?

Is the keyboard backlit and was the screen size and display resolution an impairment to long periods of reading and general work?

I don't have a problem with starter edition so long as it's priced correctly and only put on the cheapest models (I'm talking under $250). People value the ability to run Windows applications and they value their familiarity with the environment. If Starter edition is priced such that it's being put on to $300 units and above, I think Microsoft and netbook makers will face a backlash.

Hopefully there will be some renewed competition later this year from Linux and/or Android that will prompt MS to abandon starter edition.

I would not be disapointed that much actually, since I barely run more than 3 applications on my quad core desktop. For some reason, I've always used the X close button rather than the minimize button. The 3 application limit pertains to items in the task bar and not the system notification area. Because browsers are tabbed these days, 10 tabs only count as one application. Opening multiple documents in office or something might be a problem though.

The other thing is that starter edition is meant to be the very lowest end SKU designed to really compete with free Linux options. I am guessing that it's only a minor bump in price to get to the Windows 7 Home basic edition. For a product in the price range of the Asus 1000HE, I don't believe it will be a major problem to sell it with Windows 7 Home Basic.

When netbooks have Windows 7 on them, and default to the Starter edition which maxes out at 3 apps running at once, would you be disappointed? Do you expect more out of such a machine?
