I'm trying to do a fresh install of Microsoft Windows XP and I thought it would be great to upgrade it directly to Windows XP SP3.  So I download the network-install version of Windows XP3 (filename WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) and start installing it and get the disapointing news.  It appears that Windows XP Sp3 will not install on any machine that doesn't at least have SP1 installed.

I guess I'll have to see if it's possible to slipstream it in to Windows XP using nLite.

Update 7:00PM - nLite worked well and got the slipstreamed installer working.  I did have some problems installing Internet Explorer 7 but got them worked out.

Re: Shoot! Windows XP SP3 will not install on a pre-SP1 machine :(

I slipstreamed it using nlite, tested the resulting iso with Virtualbox and everything worked without a flaw.

Yeah I'm doing a fresh install now with a slipstreamed version with NLite

I wonder if NLite lets you slipstream Office service packs and hotfixes in to Office 2003.

Shoulda figured this one out in advance George. SP0 hasn't been supported in a long time.

That's not the point, I've always been able to do a fresh install and service pack

That's not the point, I've always been able to do a fresh install and service pack. A lot of people like doing a fresh install with their Windows XP RTM CD and then jumping past the dozen Windows Update reboot nonsense by installing the latest SP. This worked up until SP2 and it stopped working with SP3.

I just slipstreamed SP3 in to the fresh installer and I'm reinstalling from scratch again.

So slipstream SP1 or SP2 into an install and then sliptstream SP3 into it. You can do that, right?

I just slipstreamed SP3 on top of my SP2 install disk and it's installing from scratch now

I just slipstreamed SP3 on top of my SP2 install disk and it's installing from scratch now. I wonder if NLite lets you directly slipstream SP3 in to RTM or if you need to slipstream SP2 in there first before you can slipstream SP3.

I just love fresh installs.

Ok, just finished installing the slipstreamed SP3. Hmm, looks like IE7 did not get included in SP3.

But Pre-SP2 is unsupported

With Microsoft Dropping the support on Pre-SP2, anything is possible. Granted, they will still make the service packs available, but perhaps their change in policy means that SP3 is cumulative like previous service packs.

Nix that

At 316MB, that should work on any install of Windows. Sounds like bad beta testing on their part. Not at we shouldn't use SysPrep or nLite to get SP3 Slipstreamed.
