I am aware of two open positions for people in Columbia, SC, or who are willing to relocate. One is a junior/mid level Windows system administrator (seems a step up from making user accounts, resetting passwords, etc., but nothing too complex). The other is for a Web designer/developer; the emphasis seems to be on HTML and CSS, not the backend stuff. Let me know (or comment back) if you are interested, and I can get you in touch with the right people. Mind you, I don't know much about these positions, a recruiter friend of mine told me about them, and the positions she reps are usually very good ones (indeed, she landed me into my previous position).

Re: Open jobs: Columbia, SC
Just out of curiosity, What are the saliary rates in that area now? I know at one time, inthat paticular Area (Columbia) they were quite good for the Southern Part of the US. (that due to Columbia being the State Capital, The Uni being there, and the US Army base nearby.) I had been there (in the area) for a short time in the Summer of '84. I'm sure a lot has changed. I still think from time to time of a retirement Somewhere in the US. But I don't believe an entry level opening such as I think you're refering to here would be worth (finance wise) the effort. Something like those mentioned could be a good pre-(or post)retirement opening. -d

Clearification on the effort part: The effort being re-locating from Stuttgart, as in Germany. (as opposed to the one in Kentucky. Which does confuse some folks in the US, when the 'Search' "Stuttgart".) -d

Re: Open jobs: Columbia, SC
It's funny, the pay rates here absolutely stink. It's a combination of zero union penetration, supply/demand, and poor local education; overwhelmingly, the jobs here are warehouse, lightweight manuafacturring, and other unskilled/semi-skilled labor jobs. Charlotte, Raleigh, and Atlanta dominate the tech landscape in the region, although Columbia still has a lot of government IT jobs and insurance sector IT jobs. And thanks to globalization, the cost of living is virtually the same everywhere you go in the US, with the exception of gas, housing, and taxes. Columbia/SC gas is below the national average by quite a good bit (a combination of low state taxes, and a large supply to handle the spikes as people travel through on I-95 for vacationing), and has cheap cigarettes (for the smokers out there). But the housing here is rediculously cheap. In December, I nearly bought a 4 BR, 1800 sq. ft. split level in one of the best school districts in the state, fenced in yard, NOT in the middle of nowhere, with a pool & screened in deck for $130,000 (asking price, I know I could have talked them down). That would be a $250,000 - $400,000 house in many (if not most) parts of the country. So yes, while the actual payrate stinks (it took me 5 years here to exceed the salary I was getting in NJ at the age of 22), the total package works out OK much of the time. The big issue is benefits. The companies here traditionally don't offer good retirement or health plans, and they are slow to realize that while many blue collar workers don't have options, a lot of white collar workers do.

Fred -
Hmm, this system doesn't seem to let you send a message to me easily (bleh). Shoot me at email at j_james at-sign-goes-here mindspring.com (preferably with a resume attached) and your contact information, and I'll gladly get the recruiter in touch with you.
Thanks!
