In July, we put up our first Windows Server 2008 server. Since then, I have migrated the domain from NT 4 to the new domain (which was upgraded from 2003 to 2008 too), put in Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS), Exchange 2007, SharePoint 2007, and I am in the process of getting Dynamics CRM 4.0 in place. After all of this, I think I can fairly report on Windows Server 2008. (continued) Read More »

When I first heard about Windows Home Server, I was fairly excited about the product. The more I learned about it, I was confused about it. What I really wanted to know was if I could use it as a true server which was simply overlooked by all of the review I read, or if its backup, storage, and multimedia stories were really all there was to it. Google is used to being able to seed a patch in their server farm and POOF all users are patched. I've been slaving away over a hot Exchange 2007 server on Windows 2008 for a week now. Great product, except for the Outlook Anywhere component, which does not install itself properly. The issues are well documented by everyone except for Microsoft, it seems like. In any event, over the course of my work, I started seeing event ID 4001 in the logs a lot, with a message that said, "A transient failure has occured. The problem may resolve itself in a while. The service will retry in 56 seconds." (continued) Read More »

For most of this decade, I have worked tirelessly to educate the public and IT on the issue of wireless network security. Today I'm going to wear my myth busters hat again and alert you to the latest bunk news on the latest WPA cracking method and the irrelevant fear mongering "experts" that are pitching new VPN deployments to replace existing wireless LAN security solutions. One of the most interesting developments in the digital camera space is the convergence of HD digital video on to traditionally still cameras. We saw this first with consumer point-n-shoot digital cameras with 720P capability and now we're seeing professional grade cameras like Canon's EOS 5P Mark II implement 1080P video capability. The downside of this is that nearly all of these camera makers are adopting Apple's QuickTime MOV format and this is highlighting the gross inefficiencies of Apple's video playback software. [UPDATE 5:38PM - enabled full battery stretch mode and got more battery life in Vista] It appears that Windows XP will beat Windows Vista on notebook battery consumption. Using the 6-cell battery rated for 56.16 watt*hours with an actual 58.26 watt*hours, the Lenovo X200 in its absolutely minimal1 power state will get barely over 8 hours of battery life while Windows Vista in its minimal power state gets about 6.5 7.6 hours.
